Some states in the South wanted to separate from the country. Lincoln led the people through the Civil War, and kept the Union and the Confederate states together. In his Emancipation Proclamation, he freed the slaves in Confederate states. After the end of the war, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.
